The first Indian restaurant was not part of the mass arrival of South Asians after World War 2, not even set up by an enterprising Indian soldier in World War 1 (there were tens of thousands of them).
It seems it was Dean Mahomet, from Patna, Bihar, who opened the first Indian restaurant, the Hindostanee Coffee House in Portman Square in 1773. He offered for the 'nobility and gentry' the enjoyment of 'Indian dishes of the highest perfection'.
Thank you Dean Mahomet
